You might need to avoid contraceptive pills containing oestrogen as there is a very small risk that they can cause blood clots, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). These blood clots can be dangerous if they break off and travel around the body, such as to the lungs. Meeting others with lupus doesn’t necessarily remove these challenges but it can help you to cope with them by sharing your thoughts and concerns with someone who understands.

You’ll be given anti-sickness medication, as tablets or into a vein, before each cycle of chemotherapy. The interval between each cycle of treatment gives your body time to recover, and may vary depending on whether the number of blood cells has returned to normal between each cycle. Paclitaxel can be given before surgery to shrink a larger breast cancer.

What do steroids do?

You need to take all five tablets at one time in the morning with food and they should not be taken as individual tablets throughout the day. Steroids (also known as corticosteroids) may be used to treat a relapse in MS. Methylprednisolone is the recommended steroid. For example, if you are suspected of having a food allergy, all suspect foods will be removed from your diet, and reintroduced one at a time to see if they cause a reaction.

  • However, recent research has suggested that it’s relatively safe to use for short periods if symptoms of the menopause are severe and your lupus is otherwise well controlled.
  • In IM or IV route, the soluble esters (phosphate) are hydrolyze rapidly by tissue esterases or plasma levels, releasing the steroid with a t½ of 10 min; by IM route the tmax is obtained between 15 and 30 min.
  • If your doctor has prescribed hydrocortisone for your face, follow their instructions carefully.

  • For locally advanced and secondary breast cancer the number of cycles will vary depending on the individual.

The tablets can also be prescribed for hypopituitarism, a rare condition affecting the pituitary gland. Buccal tablets stick gently to the inside of your mouth and release hydrocortisone as they dissolve. Find out more about hydrocortisone treatments for piles and itchy bottom. However, they should be avoided or used with caution if you have an ongoing infection or a blood clotting disorder (like haemophilia). Long term use of cyclophosphamide is considered undesirable and has
been linked to an increased risk of some types of cancer, eg cancer of
the bladder. The flu vaccine is not a live vaccine so does not contain any active viruses. Talk to your chemotherapy specialist or breast care nurse about the best time to have your flu jab.

There’s no scientific evidence that suggests any form of complementary medicine helps to ease the symptoms of lupus. But if you have joint pain, acupuncture and massage may help. The pain relief may only last a short time to begin with, but repeated treatments may bring longer-lasting benefits.

Before starting paclitaxel

This can become especially apparent in the wintertime when the artificial indoor heat makes the dry winter air even drier. The itchiness of the skin can sometimes be quite intense, even causing difficulty sleeping at night. The scratching of the skin while trying to alleviate the itching can cause irritation and inflammation of the skin, as well as the development of red patches on the skin.

This will help them spot any slowing down of your child’s growth and change their treatment if needed. You’re more likely to have a serious side effect if you use a strong hydrocortisone treatment (such as hydrocortisone butyrate) or if you use hydrocortisone on a large patch of skin for a long time. Most people do not have any side effects when they use them for less than 4 weeks.

Everyone reacts differently to drugs and some people have more side effects than others. These side effects can usually be managed and those described here will not affect everyone. Before each dose you will be given medication to reduce the chances of any possible allergic reaction.

Growth problems in children

GCs are the most potent and effective drugs in the prevention and suppression of inflammation caused by mechanical, chemical, infectious and immunological stimuli. The mechanisms of action of steroids can be divided into mechanisms of genomic action and mechanisms of non-genomic action. Steroids, like any medication, can cause a variety of side-effects.

If the symptoms of your relapse are causing significant problems, such as affecting your eyesight or making walking difficult, your MS team or GP may suggest that you have a short course of high dose steroids. They should explain the benefits and potential side effects of taking steroids so that you can decide together on the best course of action in your particular situation. Your dose may need to be reduced slowly over a few weeks or months.
